snippet: A new road network geospatial database was created for the FAF 5.0 release. This new model network is more positionally accurate and has far greater detail of road features than previous FAF networks. This road network was used to assign FAF truck flows for the FAF 5.0 release. Key improvements to the network include: • Dual centerline representations for all controlled access divided highways, such as Interstates and other non-Interstate expressways. • Representation of all key interchange ramps connecting FAF road features. • Indicators of allowed traffic flow direction for all one-way road segments, including dual centerline travel ways and interchange ramps on divided highways. • Positional accuracy of most road alignments consistent with 1:5000 scale digital imagery (i.e., ± 10 meters or better). • Centroid connectors to all U.S. counties, major cargo airports and water ports based freight throughput, and U.S. border crossings with Canada and Mexico. • Inclusion of current (2018) state Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) RouteIDs and beginning and ending milepoint measures for road segments, where available. • Identification of U.S. toll facilities, including toll roads, bridges, and vehicle ferries. • Identification of roads and connecting interchange ramps that comprise the National Highway System (NHS) and National Highway Freight Network (NHFN). The FAF5 network contains 487,384 link features and 348,498 node features. All link and node features are topologically connected to permit network pathbuilding and vehicle assignment using a variety of assignment algorithms. The link features include all roads represented in prior FAF networks, and all roads in the National Highway System (NHS) and the National Highway Freight Network (NHFN) that are currently open to traffic. Other included links provide connections between intersecting routes, and to select intermodal facilities and all U.S. counties.
